Lady Geeks of Atlanta

We have some exciting news to share, and I can’t wait to let you in on it, so without further ado…

Much like an Eevee becoming a Vaporeon, we have evolved.

We have an admin team, and event organizers, and so many wonderful humans that make this group what it is.

That’s why we’re thrilled to announce that LGA is now officially a nonprofit social club.

What does this mean for you?

In order to maintain our non-profit status, we do have to charge a small membership fee. However, we want to keep this group accessible to all, so the basic tier membership fee will be $2 per year. That’s the lowest possible figure to keep the group going.

Why?

To date, all of the expenses for running the Meetup group, the website, and our larger events such as the Fantastic Feast have come out of admins’ pockets. That has rather limited the scale of our events and put undue financial pressure on our wonderful admins. In the interest of keeping Lady Geeks accessible, we are doing our best to keep membership dues as low as possible, with the option to donate more if you feel called to do so.

More available funds means more amazing events, at nicer venues, with more activities! Some events we’d love to throw for you in the future include masquerade balls, weekend trips, castle rentals abroad, and so on.

Where will the money from dues and merch be going?

All funds will be going right back into hosting events for Lady Geeks of Atlanta and maintaining the website and meetup page.

Any excess funds will be used for a sort of “scholarship fund” for members who may not have the funds available to participate in some of the paid activities. More to come on this later, but we love the idea of using our community to lift each other up.

And who knows? Maybe one day we’ll be able to have a brick and mortar Lady Geeks HQ somewhere in Atlanta, featuring a craft corner with sewing machines, Glowforges, a CNC machine, cricuts, 3-D printers and more, a not-so-little free library full of cozy reading nooks galore, a screening room where we can host premiere and finale screenings for our favorite TV shows, etc. etc. etc. One day…

How will the membership dues structure work?

Basic membership will be $2 per year. This means you’re officially a Lady Geek and have access to all the free events. Ticketed events will still cost money, but we hope that the membership fee will help us keep ticket prices minimal.

Higher membership tiers will receive discounts to ticketed events and on LGA merch so you can fly your geek flag wherever you go. More on that later!

When and how can I pay my dues?

TBD! So stay tuned for future announcements.

Will I lose access to the Facebook group and Discord server if I don’t pay?

Absolutely not. You’re still welcome to participate in our social spaces.

Finally,

You’ll notice some new merch hitting the store soon, featuring our brand new shiny logo!

Check it out! Bonus points for any Latin scholars who figure out our motto.

Thanks for being the best part of LGA. We love y'all, and we can't wait to put on more events for you this year and beyond.
